BaGuaCineseBagua Zhang, is a Chinese martial art result of a long process of development, which has reached such a high level that it can be considered an internal style effective both for fighting and for health. During the Qing Dynasty, under the reign of Xian Feng (1851 – 1861), Dong Haichuan, grounding in the theory of Xiantian and Houtian Bagua, developed a unique style of Kung fu based on the use of palms, which he called precisely Bagua Zhang or Eight Trigrams Palm.
Being an internal style, Bagua Zhang, respects some basic rules, including Hanxiongbabei and Tigangsuowei: today however, different currents of Bagua Zhang no longer follow these basic rules. In the practice of this style the exercise of walking in circles is fundamental; while doin this exercise it is important to respect the rules Zhongzhengbaoyi, Yuanhenglizhen, push the shoulders and lower the elbows, sit the wrist and empty the palm, bring the energy down in the dantian, turn the waist while sitting, hold both knees always close, legs bent walking in mud, feet always parallel to the ground, toes grasping like claws ….
During the movement, it is important to alternate the hard and the flexible, to go up and down like a wave, keep the focus on the left, right, back and forth, so that the movement is as continuous as the clouds in the sky and as flowing as the stream of water; determined, fierce, agile and lively as thunderclap and lightning, winding like a dragon, fierce as a tiger, alert as an eagle, smart as a monkey.
Care must be taken that the arms, body, eyes and feet are as one thing and to learn to manage each movement simultaneously (shan, zhan, teng, nuo), follow and feel the force.
Danhuan Zhang, Shuanghuan Zhang, Bao Zhang, He Zhang, Shexing Zhang, Kou Zhang, Huishen Zhang, Shunshi Zhang are the eight basic palms of Bagua Zhang. These palms give life to the 64 techniques of Xiantian, eight for each animal, dragon, snake, tiger, swallow, horse, eagle, phoenix and monkey. These, in turn, give birth to the 64 techniques of Houtian, enclosed in the form “Bagua Liushisi Youshen Lianhuan Zhang”. There are also several advanced forms including the form of the dragon and the form of the tiger.
In addition to the palm techniques, in order to complete the system of style, there are the fist and the kick ones and the use of vital points. Furthermore, studying the body moves will enable the practitioner to use any kind of weapon.
Bagua Zhang uses various training methods for health and to strengthen the body. During this practice, the movement must be supple, not only to strengthen joints, muscles and bone structure, but also stimulating the rebalancing of the organs and purifying and nourishing the internal tissues.
22HUANGSHAN15_0303According to the old masters, the importance of the practice of walking was higher than any other type of training; today, both the eastern and the western doctors agree that this exercise is the best way to keep your body healthy. This is the reason why walking is so basic for Bagua Zhang.
The techniques of Bagua Zhang, based on scientific principles, reached a very high level of effectiveness; for this reason were adopted inside the Emperor?s house, hidden and never taught outside.
Bagua Zhang?s fundamental method for fighting is called Chuanzhang, which, combined with the 64 techniques, creates a series of combinations so refined to be impossible to be understood by the viewer.
In fact, Bagua Zhang is also known as Quan Jue, the greatest style, or Shen Quan, divine style, or even Tianxiadiyi Quan, the first style on the earth.
Our method has been passed down by the founder Dong Haichuan to Yin Fu, then Gong Baotian, Wang Zhuangfei and finally to Wang Hanzhi; one of Wang Hanzhi?s best students is Zhang Dugan.
